Stalls & Traders took place in April & May 2011 and involved commissioning artists to make work in two markets simultaneously. Ania Bas was selected for Ridley Road Market, East London and Jeff Pigott & Julia Warin were chosen for Newport Indoor Market, South Wales.
A publication documenting the project will be available later this year and a seminar featuring artists and curators who choose to work in markets is planned for December.
For documentation of Ania Bas' A-Z Market research and guided tours on Ridley Road please see Stalls & Traders London. For documentation of Jeff Pigott & Julia Warin's installation Kiosk at Newport Indoor Market please see Stalls & Traders Newport.

The project aimed to celebrate these two markets and their unique and interesting locations, to commission work that was relevant to its environment and that could be enjoyed by all, regardless of education or knowledge of art.
Open Empty Spaces was drawn to markets, not only for their rich social histories but also because they are sites in the public realm with open access to all and social places where people still interact daily on a personal level.
Open Empty Spaces' 2011 programme is supported by Elbow Room with financial assistance from the Arts Council of Wales.
