For the initial River project Maria Teresa Gavazzi and Beatrice Carugo held a week of paper boat making workshops just downstream from the Blackweir Bridge.

They made giant paper boats from old Cardiff telephone books which they installed in a small clearing on the bank of the river and at points throughout the week these were ritually 'launched' in fleets by members of the public (or worn as boat hats at various points). Anyone passing by could learn to make a paper boat which was then either floated in the water or added to the 'paper boat yard'.

Luckily the weather was beautiful so many people of all ages came to join in with the project and very positive feedback was received from all involved.

Gavazzi decided on paper boats as the theme for her project after realizing that many people had either forgotten this simple piece of paper folding, or never learnt it in childhood. As a project it fitted very well with the site and brought back an interesting nostalgia in many for their childhood and 'the good old days'.

The Paper Boat Yard was in operation from Saturday 23rd - Friday 29th May 2009. Please click on Artists' Profiles for more information about Maria Teresa Gavazzi's art practice and a link to her website.
