He produced a three-dimensional, abstract painting comprising of geometric shapes and bright colours which fitted perfectly with the space. The painting echoed the construction materials and colours of the nearby Albany Road; connections could be seen between the brilliant glossy paints used by Houghton and the printed vinyl shop signs above takeaways, newsagents and other local businesses.
The artist managed to create a fascinating illusion of depth in a very small space using just simple block shapes and colours. From an angle the work was almost invisible but as the viewer walked by and the perspective altered different facets of the work were shown and colours revealed.
Houghton's work was installed in the space between the 22nd and 29th May 2009. Please click on Artists' Profiles for more information about his practice and links to his website.
