Taxidermied bird, bird's nest and found natural materials

The exhibition continued with a piece by Cardiff-based artist, Rebecca Spooner.

Spooner's work focuses on romantic themes in nature and she is influenced by the symbolism of animals and the ability of these creatures to convey unconscious desires and sensual metaphors.

For Hole in the Wall she drew on the physical structure of the small box and the connotations of spaces like these which are, in many countries, filled with shrines or religious offerings. She subverted this assumption however by creating a shrine to nature and the natural world, perhaps leading the audience to thoughts of an older and more traditional belief structure and set of superstitions.

In a contemporary world where many people's relationship with the natural world has changed and often become less direct Spooner has attempted to reconnect the natural and the urban. This connection however seems rooted in history, and the myths and fables of the past and is an altered interpretation of a relationship perhaps lost forever.

Central to the work was a taxidermied bird and a bird's nest surrounded by natural 'offerings' that the artist had collected. Passers-by were able to interact with the work by leaving offerings of their own.

Spooner's work was on display from the 15th - 22nd May 2009. Please click on Artists' Profiles for more information about her practice and links to her website.
