Green bin bags, wire and discarded food wrappers on a frame

Veronica Forsgren was the second artist to exhibit in the Hole in the Wall and sculpted these vibrant flowers from rubbish and discarded materials. She installed them in the space in such a way that they burst forth from the box creating a vivid and eye-catching bouquet to draw in the viewer.

The colours and materials used were taken from the local area, mirroring the vivid shop signs, the packaging of products in local shops and the discarded rubbish seen on any busy shopping street such as this. The use of rubbish to create something which is attractive to the eye and then installing it in this tiny space by the bins of a clothes shop touches on interesting subjects to do with waste in our consumer society, questions of worth and beauty and highlights Forsgren's interest in the, sometimes minute, distinction between beauty and bad taste. The artist created an installation of man-made materials that have negative connotations environmentally but then transformed them into a piece which suggested nature. Then siting this in an urban setting without much greenery also gives the viewer pause for thought.

In such an unadorned and undecorated space this installation stood out and really caught the eye. It drew on traditional ideas of folk art and decoration and how this can personalise and mark out a space, particularly one such as this which is situated in the public realm.

Forsgren's work was installed in the space from the 8th - 15th May 2009. Please click on Artists' Profiles for more information about her practice and links to her website.
